Le profil d'excitation produit par une impulsion peut être approché par la transformée de Fourier de la fonction décrivant la forme de l'impulsion (14). Dans le cas d'une impulsion rectangulaire, le profil d'excitation en fréquence suit une fonction sinus cardinal [sin(x]/x) : il présente un maximum pour la région correspondant à la fréquence de l'impulsion excitatrice, des lobes latéraux de part et d'autre de la région sélectionnée, et des oscillations dans toute la fenêtre spectrale, génératrices d'excitations parasites.
